There are three versions of the first-generation Summicron 90mm f/2 with the same optical design, but they look pretty different. They’re all built to last, focus smoothly, and have been considered high-end lenses from the start. These lenses are mostly used by professional photographers for portraits and long-distance work. They have great optics, but they’re on the heavy side.
The design of the built-in hood is pretty clever. I really like this design. The push-and-pull damping is spot on. I haven’t seen any other lens with such perfect damping, including later Leica lenses.
There are two main issues with using a 90mm lens on the Leica M camera system. Firstly, the field of view is too small, and secondly, the focusing speed is too slow. Another big issue is handshaking. The shutter speed on a 90mm lens is 1/100s. If you go below that, you’re more likely to get handshake. This makes it much less likely to be used.
